Portfolio: Heriot Watt University | G80 Lab

Client: Heriot Watt University – G80 Lab
Project Value £63,500
Project Timescale: 4 weeks
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The new medical training facility was created on the ground floor of the Earl Mountbatten Building within the Heriot Watt University campus at Riccarton, Edinburgh.
After initial strip-out and minor downtakings, the project works comprised cutting open the existing concrete floor to install new floor power/data boxes, installation of new M&E services (lighting, small -power, plumbing and heating) decoration to ceilings and floor, soft floor finishing and acoustic wall and ceiling features.
Mock medical services (gas and nurse call points) were all installed to replicate a hospital facility.
Key Challenges
1. All works were carried out within a live University building during term time with normal daily business activity of students and academic staff ongoing throughout the duration of the works.
2. The continuity of live services to all other areas of the building and the non-disruption to normal teaching and academic activity were essential at all times.
3. Deliveries were carefully worked around the students arriving and break times within the academic day.
4. With careful planning and co-ordination with the building users, all noisy works were carried out during times when no seminars or lectures were taking place in the adjacent lecture room.
Added Value
1. Alternative, equivalent floor coverings were offered which presented a significant saving to the client.
2. The project was handed over on programme to the full satisfaction of the client, creating an essential new teaching and training facility.
